Those days when I’m hating on myself for no particular reason, I find this Body Blessing practice a gem.  In yoga, the term ‘Ahimsa’ means non-violence and is the foundation for all the precepts for the code to live a yogic life.  It’s why many yogis are vegetarian, how Ghandi transformed a nation and is much easier said than done.

When I teach yoga classes around Ahimsa I begin by mentioning how harshly we speak to ourselves.  Often we say things to or about ourselves that we would never dream of saying to another.  Nearly everyone nods and looks a little sheepish. Why on Earth does this happen? Well that’s a whole other blog topic right there. For now, here is a wonderful antidote that will keep you warm and fuzzy all day.

I usually do some breathing or meditation practice followed by this body blessing then some Metta or Loving Kindness Mediation for friends and family or the world at large. It’s a powerful pattern interruption for the spiral of negativity that I can sometimes find myself in. I hope more than anything that it works for you too.

The practice is rooted in gratitude for the body and truly acknowledging the undisputed facts that I am insanely lucky and blessed to have two eyes that allow me to see sunsets, smiles on my family’s faces and the beautiful environment I live in.

We then move through the body part by part, seeing the good to awaken these feelings of love and appreciation.  Once our cup is full we are more ready to share this with others in our immediate and larger circles of care.

How to Bless Your Body

1/ Begin in a comfortable, seated meditation position of your choice.  Take a moment to centre and settle in stillness.

2/ Rub your hands together creating some warmth and heat.  Your hands have incredible healing power, whether you are trained or not.  Think of when you bump your elbow you instinctively give it a rub.  Now, kiss your palms to infuse some love in there. ❤️

3/ Place your warm loving hands over your eyes.  Love that you have two eyes and all the wonderful things they allow you to see (as I mentioned previously).

4/ Stroke over your face, relaxing the furrowed brow, towards your ears. Massage and bless your ears for taking in wonderful music, bird calls, sounds of laughter, etc. Thank you ears.

5/ Massage your head and hair thanking your wonderful brain for all it’s thoughts, ideas, dreams and insights.

6/ Moving over to your neck and shoulders now you can give them some love for all the responsibilities and burdens they carry.  You can let them all go now.

7/ Cross your arms over so that you are massaging the opposite upper arm.  Bless and massage your arms down to your hands.  You are so lucky to have two arms & hands that let you cook, play musical instruments, hug a loved one, whatever you LOVE that your arms and hands do for you.

8/ Re-charge your hands here with another rub, generating heat, then add move love by kissing them again.

9/ Lay your hands on your heart centre in the middle of your chest. Feel your heart starting to swell with all this goodness you have spawned in your heart.  How wonderful to have a heart with which we can feel the full spectrum of human experience.

10/ Start to spread that love across your chest, belly – even though they may not look exactly how you want them to, how wonderful that you have them to digest and give life to our little bodies.

11/ Massaging over the back and spine.  It’s a little harder to physically reach, though you can still send your loving attention to your spine for holding you up day after day, actually you are not spineless and never can be.

12/ Uncross your legs and start to take log brush stokes down your legs covering every single part down to your feet.  These legs and feet, wow, imagine if you didn’t have them!  You are so blessed.  Two legs to walk, skip, jump, dance, hop. So blessed.

13/ Once your entire body is tingling and buzzing with goodness that you have generated within, sit and enjoy for a little moment.  Counting your lucky stars.

14/ Once you are bursting with this goodness, be ready to send it out.  Think of those who are near and dear to you.  See their faces in your mind’s eye.  Wish them well. May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be filled with joy.

15/ Bring to mind anyone else or be willing to send this warmth  and sweetness out, trusting that the universe intelligence / life force energy will take it exactly where it needs to go most.

May all beings be happy and at peace and free.

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
